Surviving The Wave is a one hour authored documentary for BBC3 filmed in Thailand in the wake of the tsunami. On holiday on the island of Koh Lanta, producer Amanda Murray found herself in the middle of a disaster zone . The island she was on was miraculously spared much of the horrendous devastation that was suffered along the same coastline. However the neighboring island of Koh Phi Phi, just 30 km away was decimated with a death toll of nearly 1,500. In an attempt to come to terms with what happened there this documentary moves between both these islands, and discovers how the survival of communities and livelihoods in both these places are severely threatened – but in very different ways. Through the moving and tragic stories of a handful of survivors, the film is an intimate portrayal of recovery, putting a human scale on sometimes incomprehensible statistics.
