Decca Records are thrilled to today release the first-ever official World Book Day song from the nation’s favourite rapping English teacher MC Grammar, in collaboration with World Book Day, Monkey and Encanta Talent Management. All proceeds from The World Book Day Song will be donated to World Book Day to support its vision to engage children from all backgrounds with a life-long habit of reading.
MC Grammar is the creation of award-winning teacher and rapper Jacob Mitchell, who went viral in 2019 after a video of him rapping popular children’s book The Gruffalo received over 5 million views and subsequently stole the show on The Ellen Degeneres Show with another amazing, rapped version of Dr Seuss Green Eggs and Ham. Having struggled in school himself, the father of two credits his discovery of books as his turning point with education. Jacob believes no child should be left behind, and that there needs to excitement, challenge, inclusion and, most importantly, fun in the classroom!
The World Book Day Song follows MC Grammar as he embarks on a journey to find a new book, courtesy of his World Book Day free book voucher. On his way he stumbles across a range of favourites and classics including David McKee’s Elmer, Michael Rosen’s We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, Judith Kerr’s The Tiger Who Came to Tea, Marcus Pfister’s The Rainbow Fish and many, many more!
Of his ambassadorship and brand-new single MC Grammar (Jacob Mitchell) said: “I am so proud to be a World Book Day Ambassador. Mixing the power of music with the magic of books is the coolest combination and an incredible opportunity to get kids excited about books and reading.”
Cassie Chadderton, CEO of World Book Day added: “We’re so excited to be teaming up with MC Grammar for our first ever official World Book Day song. We’re here to inspire children with the transformative power of reading, and it’s great to have MC Grammar’s help to bring more of the joy and fun of World Book Day to children, whether they are at home or at school, this year.“
The song will be accompanied by an educational activity pack for children, created by MC Grammar and the charity, to support schools and families celebrating World Book Day in lockdown this year. The resources will be free to download from the World Book Day website ahead of the national celebration on Thursday 4th March.
